Hyderabad: The Army was called out on Friday to bolster rescue and relief operations in flood-ravaged Bhadradri Kothagudem district, where the swollen Godavari breached the danger mark by over 20 feet and was rising menacingly to wreak further mayhem.
Over 100 Army men comprising 68 infantry soldiers, 10 medical professionals and 23 engineers were para dropped into the flood-hit district and will operate as five independent teams.
Godavari’s level at Bhadrachalam at 10pm on Friday had risen to 71 feet, much higher than the 53feet danger mark. Officials expect flood levels to climb past 75ft as the night progresses. “Exigency plans are in place to meet any eventuality even if water levels touch 80 feet,” a senior police official of Bhadradri Kothagudem district said.
