Hyderabad: With Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicting moderate to heavy rainfall in Hyderabad on Saturday and Sunday, a defunct Doppler radar will severely impact the rapid and precise forecast. The radar, which uses the pulse doppler technique to swiftly process data for ‘nowcasting’ — predict the movement of rain-bearing clouds in the city at a 10-minute frequency — has been down for 20 days. And its absence will be felt over the next two days as rapidly changing low-pressure conditions could precipitate heavy rain in the city and trigger waterlogging.
Earlier, the radar went down during the devastating 2020 October floods in Hyderabad. Again, it went on the blink for 4-5 days last year, hindering disaster relief response during flooding. Radar images are extensively put to use by Disaster Response Force and GHMC to station rescue boats in places likely to witness heavy downpour.
