
While no concrete steps have been taken, the institute is considering possibilities to offer holistic education. Many faculty members have shown keen interest in the plan. TIFR, a deemed university, is planning to attain a ‘university’ status in line with the guidelines of the National Education Policy (NEP), said an institute's professor. As per the policy, the nomenclature of ‘deemed-to-be-university’ will soon be replaced by ‘university’ offering UG and PG programmes. Given the background of the institute and its storied reputation, if the Bachelor of Science (BS) plan materialises at TIFR, “it will be an honest attempt to offer something different and will provide a great opportunity for students,” said the professor.
