Sakshi Malik took a leaf out of her improbable Rio Olympics bronze to win a shock gold in the women's 62kg here on Friday. Trailing 0-4 at one stage, then 2-4, Sakshi took a mere 10 seconds to turn the tables on a strong Ana Godinez Gonzalez of Canada. Sakshi had clawed her way to 4-level, but time was running out. Then she affected a takedown, and aided by a reversal, pulled off a pinfall on the shell-shocked Canadian for a brilliant victory.
Sakshi's gold came after Bajrang Punia made winning look easy. Anything less than a gold here would have been a setback for him. The competition was hardly at a level that he faces at ranking tournaments organised by the United World Wrestling. So, it didn't come as a surprise when Bajrang literally waltzed through to the 65kg gold at the Coventry Stadium on Friday. The Rashidovs, Otoguros, Niyazbekovs, Aliyevs and the Muszukajevs weren't there and Bajrang used half his abilities to get the top position.
A few minutes after Sakshi's phenomenal win, Deepak Punia outclassed defending champion Muhammad Inam of Pakistan in the 86kg category, while Divya Kakran took bronze in the women's 68kg category.
