It is the highest increase in all-cause deaths seen in a decade by the state and goes to show how the virus hit the population hard.
Maharashtra registered a total of 8,08,783 deaths in the first year of the pandemic, up from 6,93,800 in 2019, according to data released by the registrar general on Tuesday. In the preceding years, annual deaths were increasing by an average of 3%-4%. Therefore, keeping aside the annual increase, Maharashtra saw almost 82,000 more deaths in 2020. Of these, only 54,569 fatalities were officially attributed to Covid-19, indicating that the true toll of the pandemic could have been undercounted.
