New Delhi: Monsoon is expected to arrive in Delhi in the next few weeks. On average, the city receives rain for 29 days during the season.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said June to September is the period when the city is likely to receive “heavy” rainfall of above 64.5mm in a day. In 2021, seven “heavy” rainfall days were recorded at Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, the highest ever. Usually, only 2-3 such days are seen.
Before 2021, there had been six “heavy” rainfall days in 1964 since 1901, when IMD started maintaining records in Delhi. In the past 10 years, the city has mostly seen two “heavy” rainfall days, while no such day was observed in 2020, 2019, 2018, 2016 and 2012.
