Having failed to notify even a single wetland so far from the 1,040 in the city, the Delhi Wetland Authority is now distinguishing natural wetlands from man-made ones and has prioritized four for legal protection.
Wetland officials, who had earlier shortlisted 20 wetlands to notify as early as possible, are now focusing on four and have recommended to Delhi government that Sanjay Lake be notified, while legal vetting and consideration of other problems like encroachment, condition, and ownership are being carried out for Welcome Jheel, Tikri Khurd Lake and Smriti Van in Vasant Kunj.
In 2020, the Union environment ministry issued guidelines on implementing the Wetland (Conservation and Management) Rules 2017 to provide legal protection to the waterbody and prohibit acts like the dumping of waste and discharge of untreated effluents in the lakes and encroachment on the lake area.
