When news broke of his firing, Sheldon Keefe was inudated with calls from current and former players. “It was a pretty great experience for me just to have so many people reach out,” he said.
Sheldon Keefe had a gut feeling that he was going to be fired as coach of the Maple Leafs.
There was a meeting with GM Brad Treliving shortly after the Leafs were eliminated in seven games by the Boston Bruins.
“It was surface level stuff, and he was saying that he was going to take some time and think about everything,” Keefe said in a phone interview Tuesday. “But I had a pretty good sense of where things were at and how they were playing out.”
There would be another meeting. “I believe it was a Thursday, but I had a pretty good sense that day I was going to wake up and be called in for a meeting, and I knew what the result was going to be,” Keefe said. “I didn’t sleep much that night. I was up around 3 a.m., rolling around in bed.”
The meeting came. The news was delivered. Keefe recorded a video on the shores of Lake Ontario to thank the players, the organization and its fans for his five years behind the bench. That gave him closure, he said.
“It’s been my happy place to go down there by the water and spend some time to clear my head,” he said.
Then he went for lunch with his wife, Jackie.
