Andreescu shows mental toughness

Given her multiple injury issues in recent years, Bianca Andreescu says every time she can step on the court feels like a win.

But let’s be honest. There’s no substitute for actually winning on the scoreboard.

Which is what the 24-year-old from Mississauga managed on Wednesday with a deft, straightsets win over 23rd-seed Linda Nosková, propelling her into the third round at Wimbledon.

No singing encore to the tennis on this day — after her opening-round match, Andreescu had entertained the crowd with an a cappella snatch of “O Canada” on Canada Day — but a huge win after dusting off her opponent with a wicked, declarative backhand return on the Czech teenager’s serve, her 28th winner.

“If I can get that extra win of actually winning the match and finishing it off, then yeah, it’s a bonus. My goal is to keep having that momentum. Obviously I want to win every match I play, but I know that’s not always possible. I just want to keep it going.”

The giddy-up-and-go has been oft-interrupted for the 2019 U.S. Open champion. Nearly 10 months on the sidelines last season into this one, recovering from a stress fracture in her back. Previous to that, two torn ligaments in her ankle. And before that, an extended mental health break.
