Gabriela Dabrowski helped Canada win a bronze medal in mixed doubles Friday.
The first moments of uncertainty came years ago, early in her career, when the Ottawa native was struggling to make a living on the professional circuit. She questioned her future but found a way forward in the sport she loved. She recast herself as a doubles specialist, and a good one at that.
The second time Dabrowski, 33, started reconsidering her career was last year, when she began to wonder if it wasn’t time to start forging a future off the court.
She told a group of up-and-coming players that her turnaround is thanks to new people she met who brought joy into her life. All of Canada should be thanking them, too.
Dabrowski and mixed doubles partner Félix Auger-Aliassime won a bronze medal Friday, beating Dutch duo Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof in 6-3, 7-6 (2) in the Olympics tennis tournament at Roland-Garros.
“I think winning as a team is always more fun so I’m just really proud of myself, of us,” Dabrowski said afterward.
