PARIS When we look back, maybe we'll say it's good that it was tough. Maybe it's good that Greece was physical, that they hit some shots, that Giannis Antetokounmpo was a wrecking ball and his teammates had experience, that Canada's men's basketball team had to decide who was truly up to this, under some pressure. Maybe we'll get to say they grew from this, and they learned. International basketball, after all, is a different beast to play.
In the end, Canada's 86-79 win over Greece was a lot of things, all at the same time: a promising start, a nervy affair, a glimpse of potential, and a triumph 24 years in the making.
It's easy to forget that Canada's last men's Olympic basketball appearance was so long ago that Steve Nash wasn't even a full-time NBA starter yet. A whole generation has grown up in basketball since then, and another one behind that, and finally they're at the Games. With this game, it became real.
And then it almost became a little too real, with a 16-point lead whittled down to two with a minute or so to play. At that point it had become clear that there were issues with this team, in this moment: Jamal Murray was far from being the clutch killer he can be at his peak, and a lack of size plus Giannis means that sometimes Dillon Brooks, Lu Dort and Dwight Powell will all foul out, leaving a second unit that on Saturday was ... well, unimpressive.
