Family remembers mother and baby killed in quadruple Vaughan shooting

'It doesn't make sense'

Thi Trang Do and her son Marcus Vu were killed in their Vaughan home on June 21. Her husband, Tue Vu, and a fourth family member were also shot, but survived. Vu says the accused shooter is a family friend.

Two-year-old Marcus Vu had an infectious laugh and fancied anything red, like the cherished Toronto Raptors hat he wouldn’t leave the house without.

Forty-year-old Thi Trang Do was a highly respected realtor and a “perfect” wife and mother with a selfless heart.

The mother and son were killed on the morning of June 21 after a gunman opened fire inside their Vaughan home on Casa Nova Drive. Neighbours said they heard the gunshots from down the block. About a dozen emergency vehicles arrived within minutes.

Do’s husband, Tue Vu, 41, and a fourth family member were also shot, but survived and have since been released from the hospital. Vu said his first child, Marcus’s fouryear-old brother, was standing next to him when he was shot, but was unharmed.

Investigators with York Regional Police said the quadruple shooting was targeted.

Van Viet Duong, 41, of Toronto, is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Do, who immigrated to Canada from Vietnam as a young girl, came from an accounting background and previously worked at Microsoft. Eventually, she grew tired of the monotonous routine and became a realtor.

“She wanted to talk to more people, which I was super surprised about because she’s such an introvert,” said her younger half-brother, James Tieu. “She loved doing that job and helping people. Her clients trusted her a lot.”
