Ten facts to help you survive, and even thrive, during the dog days of summer in the city
DAVID RIDER
Lazy, hazy and occasionally crazy

Summer in Toronto equals hot, sweaty, complicated fun. Complicated because, unlike a small town where the big decision is whether to go to the park or the restaurant, this big city reacts to heat and sun by exploding in a million different directions.

There will be moments of sunkissed bliss and dappled delight. Also, boiling anger in traffic gridlock and endless ferry lines, and everything in between.

We compiled 10 key facts that illuminate torrid Toronto to help you survive, and even thrive, through the lazy, hazy and occasionally crazy days of summer.

1. Busiest outdoor pool

The city operates 140 outdoor pools, wading pools and splash pads, but Gus Ryder Pool remains the most popular. The Olympicsized tank at Lake Shore Boulevard West and Parkside Drive, alongside Sunnyside beach and a historic bathing pavilion, first opened in 1925 and was once the world’s largest pool. Last summer, the busiest day was Friday, July 28, when Gus Ryder drew almost 1,700 bathers amid heat, humidity and four beaches closed by pollution levels.

2. Cleanest and dirtiest beaches

Beaches at Marie Curtis Park suffered the most no-swim days last summer due to high E. coli bacteria levels. The city deemed only 49 out of 91 days safe. Possible factors include nearby storm sewer outlets that, after heavy rainfall, can put sewage into the lake. The cleanest beaches were both on the islands. Hanlan’s Point and Gibraltar beaches each recorded only one unsafe day last year.

3. Busiest park
