As the Maple Leafs start climbing the mountain again, some things have changed. There’s a new coach in Craig Berube, and a new captain in Auston Matthews who, like William Nylander, has a new contract extension kicking in.
And then there’s Mitch Marner, around whom the biggest question still revolves. He has a year left on his deal, a no-movement clause, and an agent with a history of walking players to free agency, when given the chance. Marner will be the centre of attention Monday at the annual charity golf tournament, where he will probably say he wants to remain a Leaf, while leaving everything to agent Darren Ferris.
It seems obvious what will have to happen next: The Leafs will have to sign Marner to an extension. It’s that or craft the perfect trade for a player who doesn’t want to leave, and doesn’t appreciate not being appreciated. Marner worked with Colorado’s Nate MacKinnon this summer, and Mackinnon leapt to Marner’s defence at the NHL/ NHLPA media tour.
“Marner gets a lot of flak in Toronto,” Mackinnon told The Canadian Press. “But he’s honestly one of the best players in the league. I play with some of the best players in the league, and then I skate with Marns, and he’s right up there with anyone. Especially at that camp, there was a lot of good players. He stuck out as one of the best.”
