Ottawa urges 'caution' amid riots

Riot police face protesters in Bristol, England on Saturday. Misinformation around a mass stabbing last month that saw three children killed has led to riots fuelled by far-right and anti-immigrant protesters.

The Canadian government is warning travellers to the U.K. to “exercise a high degree of caution,” as violent far-right protests continue across the country.

Misinformation around a mass stabbing that saw three children killed has led to protests fuelled by far-right and anti-immigrant sentiment. Protesters have clashed with police for more than a week and officers were prepared for another night of violence, expecting more than 100 events, according to The Associated Press.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday blamed “far-right hatred” for the “breakdown in law and order on our streets.”

Meanwhile, demonstrators have rallied around broad anti-immigrant slogans — “enough is enough,” “save our kids” and “stop the boats.”

Already 400 arrests have been made by police across the country.

What are the U.K. protests about?

The protests are ostensibly in response to a mass stabbing at a Taylor Swift-themed summer holiday dance class where three children age nine or younger were killed on July 29.
