Shooter gets manslaughter in 2022 death

Olivier Dundas, a 20-year-old journalism student, was killed in an altercation on a downtown Toronto street in January 2022.

Three young men were initially charged with murder in the January 2022 shooting death of 20-yearold journalism student Olivier Dundas in downtown Toronto.

As the matter progressed through the courts, the Crown’s case slowly began to crumble, and not one of them would end up being convicted of that charge.

Dundas and two friends were shooting a music video when they were approached near Bloor and Church streets by the trio of James Galinato, Jay-Ar Carbonel and Jessie Biag, whom they did not know. Following an altercation, Dundas was shot and killed.

Late Thursday afternoon, a jury acquitted the shooter, 24-year-old Galinato, of second-degree murder, but found him guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter. He was also found guilty of unlawful possession of a loaded firearm.

Jurors fully acquitted Carbonel, 25, whose charges were downgraded this month to manslaughter by the trial judge due to lack of evidence to support the murder charge. Unlike Galinato, he has been out on bail. In a brief statement to the Star, he thanked the jury and his lawyers Dirk Derstine and Malaika Henriques, as well as his family and friends “for being behind him.”
