King Street streetcar travel times through the priority corridor ranged from 17 to 21 minutes when traffic agents were present - and between 45 to 65 minutes without them.
Adding traffic agents along the King Street transit priority corridor has reduced streetcar travel times by about two thirds, according to a new city report.
The city deployed 12 traffic agents, two at each of six intersections along King Street, at the end of November after unprecedented road closures and construction in Toronto's downtown core dramatically slowed streetcar traffic along the transit priority corridor.
On Nov. 23, it took a Star reporter 79 minutes to travel along King Street between Bathurst and Jarvis Streets, while a driver on an alternate route took an hour. A reporter on a bicycle crossed the transit corridor in just 13 minutes, while a pedestrian took 27 minutes.
According to the city, between Nov. 27, when traffic agents were deployed, and the end of January, streetcar travel times through the priority corridor ranged from 17 to 21 minutes when traffic agents were present between 5 and 6 p.m. on weekdays. By comparison, it took a streetcar between 45 to 65 minutes to cross the corridor without traffic agents. However, streetcar performance rapidly deteriorated after the traffic agents left for the day.
