Have a pre-session consultation
There are several headshot styles, and various models/clients/subjects will require varied aesthetic outcomes based on the objective of the headshot.
For example, an artistic, colour-graded style may suit a fashion model but may not be appreciated by a business customer. So, before your session, meet with your topic. Make certain you understand how your headshot photos will be used. You may even inquire outright, "What type of style do you want?". Also, be prepared to demonstrate a plethora of examples that highlight various aesthetic possibilities.
This consultation might take conducted over the phone or in person. However, it is not advisable communicating in writing; chatting to your subject can help them relax far more than an email, and you may use the consultation to assist them prepare for the session as well (by explaining what to expect and by answering their questions).
Pro Tip: Use the consultation to figure out your subject's occupation if the headshots will be utilised for corporate materials. A business lawyer could like a pristine white backdrop, but a more relaxed professional (such as a yoga instructor) might prefer a colourful, environmental image.
• Help your subject choose the right clothes
In general, basic, neutral colours work best for headshots since you don't want anything distracting from people's faces. If you want to go for a more formal look, make sure everyone remembers to wear their best work clothing. Men frequently forget their coats, so keep one on available for a constant appearance, even if you have to clip it at the back.
