Sigma lenses are known worldwide for their high performance and are manufactured under three series - Art, Contemporary and Sports. Art series lenses offer the ultimate in image and build quality but are generally larger, heavier and costlier compared to Contemporary and Sports lenses. Sports series are generally longer focal lengths meant for action photography and are also weather-proof. Contemporary lenses are more affordable versions of the other two series but while still retaining the high standards of the other two. The lens under review is the 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN C lens.
Design & Build Quality
Like all Sigma lenses, the 30 mm f/1.4 DC DNC lens for Nikon ZX-mount is well built. It uses Thermally Stable Composite (TSC) for its lens barrel and aperture parts which help to keep the lens compact and further help in smooth functioning of the aperture system. The lens mount is made from brass for strength and durability. A rubber seal at the mount prevents dust and water splashes from entering the lens. Filter size is 52 mm. The lens is made in Japan.
Key Features
Lens nomenclature: 'DC' indicates the lens is designed for APS-C sensor cameras; 'DN' indicates that the lens is designed for Mirrorless cameras.
The Sigma 30 mm f/1.4 DC DN C lens for Nikon Z mount is constructed with nine elements in seven groups that include two aspherical elements and one high reflective index element. These special elements reduce chromatic aberrations and distortion and thus improve overall image quality. Additionally, a Super Multi-Layer Coat is applied to certain elements to minimise flare and ghosting, especially in against-the-light shots. A Stepping Motor controls the autofocus, making it quiet as well as accurate.
