REDEMPTION SONG

220's home of Bristol saw 800 racers take on the city's major, closed-road triathlon in June. Matt Baird joined them hoping to expunge some racing demons of his own...

REDEMPTION SONG

Not one but two stewards haul me onto the swim exit pontoon, where I remained, beached whale-style, for what felt like the length of Avatar 2. “You’ve got to be the last swimmer of the day, right?” a steward asked, possibly rhetorically. And things were downhill from there. Among tough competition, my first Bristol Triathlon attempt in 2010 remains the nadir of my tri career, edging out my second dysfunctional Bristol Triathlon experience in 2013.

Even if the results from both races seem to have disappeared from the internet (if only I could say the same about the pics of Lance Armstrong racing triathlon in his budgie smugglers), I’ve been longing to make amends at my local race since, well, 2013. Now, after a decade I’m finally ready to return. My Wave 6 is called forward to the Cumberland Basin water’s edge and down onto the starting pontoon. It’s time to exorcise some demons and seek some swim, bike and run redemption. Now I just need to remember how to swim…

SHINE ON

The Bristol Triathlon has been through a few different organisers since its debut in 2010, including the Outlaw’s OSB and local club BAD Tri. It’s also acted as an ITU World Champs qualifier on a couple of occasions. The race is now in the capable hands of Tough Runner UK, the devious minds behind the Escape from Afan Duathlon, a brutal off-road experience that handed my bottom to me on a platter in November 2019.

How to Carb Load - Packing your working cells with carbohydrates in the build-up to your big race is a proven strategy to race stronger and faster...

Whichever distance triathlon you're racing, the intensity and duration of your activity will see your body tap into its stores of carbohydrates (in the form of glycogen) to power your effort. While it's possible to top up your tank on the go, it's better to start your event with your stores full to the brim.

The Olympic Champion - On 31 July, Great Britain's Alex Yee put together arguably the greatest one-day performance we have ever seen at an Olympic Games to win gold. And we were there at the finish line to speak to tri's new poster boy...

The opening line of the race report read how 20 years on from New Zealand’s first and only Olympic triathlon gold medal, Hayden Wilde had put in a careerbest performance to regain the title for his nation. Then Alex Yee comes around the corner.Yee’s charge, seemingly from nowhere on the final lap of the 10km run in Paris, didn’t just help him become the most decorated Olympic male triathlete of all time, and didn’t just cap a rivalry that has been building for six years, it left seasoned watchers of swim, bike, run in awe. It will go down as one of the greatest triathlon races; Yee, still just 26, as one of the greatest triathletes. His medals from Paris added to the two from Tokyo, leaving his haul at two gold, a silver and a bronze, and counting.
