POP A WHEELIE
Bicycling South Africa|January/February 2023
Wheelies aren’t just a super-cool trick. They actually offer some practical skills you can use every day on the bike.
POP A WHEELIE

Being able to easily and quickly lift your front wheel off the ground can help you avoid potholes, go up curbs, hop over logs, and generally navigate less-than-ideal road surfaces.

If you want to learn how to do a proper wheelie, we’ve broken it down into some easy steps for you:

STEP 1 // PICK A PRACTICE SPOT

Find a gentle incline to ride up – it’ll help slow you down. If you’re a beginner and worried about hurting yourself, look for a soft surface like short-cut grass; something you could roll on that isn’t concrete would be great.
