Kaizer Chiefs have extended their barren trophy run into another year. When will it end?
Mark Gleeson
NO GOLD

Yusuf Maart's magical strike from inside his own half to win the derby against archrivals Orlando Pirates will have wiped the slate clean for Kaizer Chiefs after an inconsistent start to the season.

The long-range goal - arguably the best yet seen in more than half a century of derby confrontations not only won the game and handed success-starved fans bragging rights, but also put the seal on a convincing performance that, up until then, had not been evidenced at the club.

It was their last league game before the break for the World Cup and Chiefs moved up to fourth spot in the DStv Premiership standings as they look for a massive change in their fortunes.

The manner of the victory was impressive, with rookie coach Arthur Zwane and sidekick Dillon Shepard looking to get their tactics spot on and smother any spark that Pirates tried to ignite.

It was the kind of dominant showing, in a match of stature against a classy. opponent that Chiefs need to display if they are to convince they might yet still be a force in the domestic game.

Desperate fans are looking to cling on to some life raft of hope... but even with the polished derby performance, few are convinced that a new dawn is on the horizon.

These kinds of performances are all too infrequent and overall, Chiefs still look to be floundering, maybe even slowly sinking.

They are already seven points adrift of leaders Mamelodi Sundowns after 13 matches, not even at the halfway point of the league season.
