Dhruv Sitwala’s billiards career, which commenced at 21, has been marked by remarkable achievements. He recently captured his third Asian Championship title by defeating multiple world champion Pankaj Advani, a testament to his enduring skill and determination at the age of 51.

Sitwala’s career is decorated with a dozen international medals, including three golds, and nine national medals, with one gold. His victory over Advani, a nine-time Asian champion and frequent tournament roommate, was particularly notable. Reflecting on his win, Sitwala shared, “Pankaj is a good friend and often my roommate at tournaments. He’s known for his comebacks, but I had strategies in place and focused on showcasing my skills. Fortunately, my plans worked, and I overcame his challenge in the finals.”

Inspiration from friends

Dhruv Sitwala’s journey in billiards began with a casual visit to Juhu Club with friends, where he developed a keen interest in the game. He started training under Sir Wilson Jones, a former world champion, at Malabar Hill Club. Within months, he began winning local tournaments, boosting his confidence.

After graduating in commerce, Sitwala joined the Railway Department. Despite the demands of his job, he maintained a rigorous practice schedule. His sports career received a further boost when he joined the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation, which provided him with more opportunities to compete and excel.
