BEYOND BARRIERS - SHEETAL DEVI

In the tranquil village of Loidhar, tucked amidst the verdant landscapes of the Kishtwar district in Jammu and Kashmir, a story of unwavering determination and resilience emerges, personified by the extraordinary journey of Sheetal Devi.

Sheetal hails from a family rooted in farming, her father tilling the land and her mother breeding sheep. Sheetal’s entry into the world was marked by a condition known as phocomelia, leaving her without both hands from the shoulders. However, from an early age, Sheetal showcased an extraordinary determination that transcended her physical limitations. She would scale the trees surrounding her home, adeptly plucking fruits and flowers with the nimbleness of her feet. Writing with her legs was second nature to her, effortlessly manoeuvring tasks that might seem daunting to many.

This innate prowess, coupled with an unyielding spirit, instilled a profound belief in her parents that she was destined for greatness, regardless of the challenges she faced. Education was her beacon, and a career in teaching became her aspiration. Crafting makeshift bows and arrows from tree sticks, Sheetal plunged into the world of archery. The initial journey was fraught with difficulties, yet her resolve remained unshaken. Competing alongside able-bodied athletes, she was acutely aware of the absence of a separate platform for disabled athletes in local competitions. However, driven by her love for the sport, she participated wholeheartedly, cherishing every moment as a valuable learning experience.

Despite facing setbacks and challenges in archery, Sheetal’s determination became the cornerstone of her journey. Her approach was not just about achieving success but revelling in the joy of the sport itself. Every competition, whether victorious or not, was a chapter in her unwavering pursuit of excellence.
