Players within the French league system knew what was expected of them and what rewards they would have off the pitch if they could deliver on it and remained loyal throughout their career.
I remember Maurice Colclough, below, telling me the story of his journey through France and being picked to play for Angouleme after luckily hitching a ride with the then French coach of the club after being thrown off a train because he had the wrong ticket.
Maurice always laughed at the fact that once he played his first game he was provided with a flat, a car and the cost of his journey to Angouleme. When asked what the cost was he said 400 which raised a bit of tension as that was quite a lot then, but they agreed and paid £400 into his new French bank account. This was a bit of a shock for Maurice as he spoke little French at the time and had meant 400 Francs which was about £40.
