Introduction

It must be the most useful tree in the world. Indonesia, Philippines, India and Sri Lanka are the major coconut-growing countries. In India, 90% of coconut production is from four southern states - Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. To reduce the post-harvest losses and to generate an income for coconut growers, value added products have been developed. A glimpse about the developed product is given below.

Value added products Tender coconut water

Coconut water refers to the liquid endosperm of a tender coconut at an age of approximately 9 months from time of pollination, the period before the solid endosperm or white meat forms. The natural carbohydrate content is between 4-5% of the liquid solution. This make coconut water particularly suitable for the burgeoning sports drink market.

Neera

The vascular sap collected from immature unopened coconut inflorescence is popularly known as “Neera” in fresh form. It is sweet and oyster white in colour and translucent. It is tapped from the coconut inflorescence and is filtered, pasteurized, and bio preservatives added to preserve the product. It is a sugar-containing juice and is a delicious health drink with rich source of sugars, minerals and vitamins.
