Fancy getting involved in a crucial wildlife survey and making a real difference to our feathered friends? 2023 marks the 44th year of the Big Garden Bird Watch.
"Last year, an impressive 700,000 members of the public took part. This year we're hoping, even more, will sign up," explains Charlotte Ambrose, spokesperson for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB). "It provides an invaluable snapshot of how birds are faring."
Sadly, the numbers of garden bird species are dwindling. Land used for development and changes in farming practices have resulted in a loss of habitat necessary for feeding and nesting locations. So it's become even more vital to monitor and help birds if we can, says Charlotte. "And in winter, with no leaves in the trees, it's much easier to see them! "Over the weekend of January 27-29, we're asking you to dedicate just one hour of your time to help," says Charlotte. "Find a good spot to sit and observe and simply count the birds that land in your garden, outside space or local park.
"We have a free guide to different types of birds that can be ordered by post or viewed online at rspb.org.uk. Or you can grab a copy of The RSPB Pocket Guide to British Birds by Simon Harrop." The data is then collected by the RSPB and used to help guide and inform future conservation strategies, she explains.
Avian (Bird) Flu
Avian flu, or bird flu, is a virus that affects birds, including poultry and wild birds. "It is far less likely to affect garden birds but, when out and about walking near lakes, ponds and rivers, be vigilant and please report any dead birds you see to DEFRA," says Charlotte. However tempting, for now don't feed waterfowl, such as swans, ducks and geese, she urges. "This encourages birds to flock together, increasing the risk of spreading the virus."
