There’s never been a more crucial time for the British royal family to follow the advice, Keep calm and carry on. In the wake of the publication of Prince Harry’s explosive memoir Spare, the royals are maintaining a dignifi ed silence over his shocking claims, which include his brother Prince William being physically violent and his stepmother Camilla leaking negative stories to the press. But behind closed doors, Harry’s family will be furious with him for revealing personal details, some of them very contentious. Royal correspondent Katie Nicholl says William is “privately seething and devastated by what Harry has done. He just cannot forgive Harry for the things he has written”.
While Harry says he did not want to hurt his family, royal writer Richard Fitzwilliam says that is exactly what he has done.
“War has been declared. This is part and parcel of a campaign against the royal family, and it is really intended to harm them.”
Katie says Harry, 38, knows that the royals will follow the motto of “Never complain, never explain,” and keep quiet. “The palace is reluctant to engage at any level because once they do, it just fuels the narrative and Harry has made so many allegations, it’s almost impossible to address every one.”
As well as talking about the physical altercation with William, 40, that started after an argument about Harry’s wife Meghan, Harry has outlined how strained their relationship has been since childhood, and how he has always felt like he was expendable, because he’s not the heir to the throne.
