It’s a hugely popular satirical TV show known for its surreal humour. But Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, aren’t laughing about an episode of South Park that pokes fun at them.
Meghan in particular is very “upset and overwhelmed” about the way they’ve been depicted in an episode titled World Privacy Tour. It features a cartoon couple called the Prince and Princess of Canada – who bear a strong resemblance to Harry and Meghan – loudly begging for privacy while drawing attention to themselves.
The pair are seen promoting the prince’s book, called Waaagh, which has a cover that’s reminiscent of the cover of Harry’s memoir Spare, and touring the world on a We Want Privacy tour.
A source close to the Sussexes says Meghan, 41, is not happy about how she’s been portrayed and their legal team is “casting an eye over” the episode. But a spokesperson for the couple has said that rumours they were suing the show were “boring and baseless”.
However, royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams says the South Park episode should be a wake-up call for the couple because it’s an indication that support for them is waning in America.
“They should be concerned that their standing in the US seems to be changing. A Newsweek poll showed it to be seismically affected after Harry rubbished his family in his memoir.
“In the TV show, when they move to South Park, their neighbour Kyle says, ‘It’s seriously driving me crazy. I’m sick of hearing about them. I can’t get away from them.’ I think he speaks for many millions.”
