HOW MUCH?
The NHS recommends women should aim for an intake of 2.7ltr of liquid a day - about 11 glasses.
Sweating in the sunshine? If you're not getting enough water, especially during the summer, it could have a negative effect on your health. 'On a hot day, you will need to drink a lot more because we lose fluid due to increased sweating,' says nutrition expert Penny Weston.* This can affect your energy, concentration and mood. But reaching your fluid intake goals needn't feel like a slog. Here's how to stay hydrated this sunny season and beyond.
1 Bottle it
Not only do reusable bottles reduce plastic waste, they can also help motivate you to drink more water as you’ll have it with you throughout the day, says Penny. Leave it where you spend most time as encouragement to drink, and take a filled water bottle with you when you’re out and about. ‘Some bottles are even designed with motivational time markers to help you reach your goal,’ adds Penny.
2 Set reminders
Forget to hydrate? Use your smartphone to jog your memory. ‘I’d recommend using an app or the alarm on your phone’, says registered dietician Sasha Watkins.** ‘Set these reminders every 30 minutes. This is especially effective if you’re the type of person who often forgets to eat or drink throughout the day due to a busy schedule.’ We rate Water Reminder app (free, iOS and Android).
