A firm favourite on tourists' wish lists, there are more reasons to head south-west to Devon than undulating green hills, golden sands and cream teas. The regional capital city of Exeter has been perched up on the River Exe since Roman times, so it comes with a rich history, along with a vibrant local culture and great shopping! Plus, it’s the ideal size for exploring on a weekend. Here’s your to-do list when in town…
To the cathedral
In the heart of the city, Exeter’s magnificent Gothic cathedral should be your first stop. Ever-present since the 12th century, and free to visit, it features sculpted Norman towers, medieval stained glass and remarkable stone vaulting punctuated with gilded carvings – all a reflection of the city’s important religious status during the Middle Ages. Take in the structure from all angles from the surrounding Cathedral Green, then enjoy the neighbouring historic buildings, which survived Nazi bombing during World War Two, when the city was targeted because it was a tourist attraction, in the infamous Baedeker raids.
