Why go?
So much has been written about this great city's many charms, you may well feel like you've seen it all before - whether you've actually pounded the pavements or from watching it in movies. Yet alongside the usual tourist must-sees are some less-mentioned treasures that New Yorkers know very well, but share a little less...
Take in some art
New York has many amazing museums: the Guggenheim, MOMA and the Metropolitan, to name a few. However, they're large and can become crowded. For something else, why not visit The Frick Collection, next to Central Park on East 70th Street?
Once home to the coal-and steel-rich Frick family, this beautiful mansion, which was bequeathed to the public, is crammed with awe-inspiring works of art. Mostly collected by magnate Henry Clay Frick at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries, the collection features paintings by artists including El Greco, Goya, Titian and Velázquez. You can get so close to the art that you're able to see the brushstrokes, plus there are regular tours and concerts, so it's worth checking what's on when you arrive in the city.
