Spring clean without HARMING YOUR HEALTH

Everyday toxins can have a big impact on your body and mind without you realising
Spring clean without HARMING YOUR HEALTH

A tidy house is said to equal a tidy mind, and the start of spring is the perfect time to give your home a deep clean. But could your cleaning products be causing issues without you even realising? Many contain ingredients which are highly irritant to both the skin and respiratory system. Natural alternatives are cheaper, just as effective, and won’t harm you or the planet. Here are our top picks for a healthier clean.

Staying safe

There’s evidence to suggest that endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), often found in cleaning products, can interfere with the network of hormones and glands that regulate our body. ‘These damage women’s four main hormones – oestrogen, thyroid, cortisol and insulin – affecting how we feel and perform,’ says nutritionist Nicki Williams*. The good news? There are plenty of easy ways to limit exposure. 'You don't need to throw everything away,' says Nicki. 'Start to explore alternatives one product at a time. So, when you run out of your laundry liquid, for example, think about switching to a more natural brand.'

* STRUGGLING TO SLEEP?

Various EDCs may be the cause of disrupted sleep in up to 60% of menopausal women**.

Shop wisely

Look for cleaning products labelled allergy or scent-free - they tend to contain lower levels of harmful chemicals, says Wendy Davies from Asthma + Lung UK. 'Plus, choose solid or liquid cleaning products over sprays, which you breathe in more easily, and use water and a damp cloth to clean where you can.'
