Bruges, the ‘Venice of the North’, is as gorgeous as it gets. A compact medieval city built around a network of curvy canals, every building seems more beautiful than the last. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the oval-shaped city centre is just about 430 hectares, meaning it only takes 20 minutes to walk from top to bottom through its Gothic architecture; excluding stops at quirky museums, magical markets and one-of-a-kind souvenir shops, of course.
What’s more, it takes only three hours and 25 minutes to reach Bruges from the UK by Eurostar, so it’s the perfect place for a picturesque weekend with your other half. You’ll need to change in Brussels for a local Belgian train, but for a small additional fee, your Eurostar ticket will cover you all the way to Bruges. Arrive on Friday evening, and you’ll get to the city in time for golden hour, when the low sun illuminates the old brick buildings with a warm and inviting glow.
