Fifty thousand. That's the number of koalas killed on Kangaroo Island during the 2019 Black Summer bushfires.
It's a number Dana Mitchell, co-owner of South Australia's Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park, can't bear to dwell on.
"The bushfires devastated us," Dana, 32, tells Woman's Day. "We saw countless koalas, kangaroos, possums and echidnas come into the centre with burns and injuries. We had vets working around the clock to save them."
