Oh, no! Shane Adams shot up in his tent to the commotion of screeching horse-neighing and galloping hooves. Every year, Shane, a Utah native who grew up riding and training horses, and a group of friends headed into the Cedar Mountains of Utah to watch the wild mustangs and their new foals. But it was unusual for the wild horses to come close to a campsite. Hearing them, Shane’s heart pounded.
Mongo! his mind reeled as he scrambled outside to check on his horse, who had been hitched to a fence. He was horrified to find that the clip and swivel attached to Mongo’s rope had failed…and Mongo was galloping away after the herd.
Shane had owned and trained then-10-year-old Mongo since he was a 2-year-old colt. The buckskin colored half quarter horse and half Percheron was majestic in size and had a heart just as big.
Without stopping to even put on shoes, Shane took off running after his beloved friend. He searched for hours, then, although it had been mostly spring-like weather that March of 2014, a surprise snowstorm started. Six inches quickly fell. Devastated, Shane was forced to return to camp.
I’m not giving up, Shane vowed as the group headed home. I’ ll do whatever it takes to find my Mongo and bring him home.
