We all love an episode (or four) of our favourite TV show, but is this binging affecting our health?
If you rush home so you can watch the next episode of Black Mirror with your boyfriend, flatmates, family or pooch, you are not alone. According to recent Roy Morgan research, we spend on average 18 hours or 1095 minutes a week glued to the box. And while it wasn’t so long ago that we used to have to wait a week between episodes (a week!), now we have access to all 62 hours of Breaking Bad at the touch of a button.
The temptation is real. And it turns out we’re not good at self-restraint. In fact, the average length of binge watching in Australia has increased from five to six episodes in one sitting, with more than 59 per cent of us binging on a regular basis, found Deloitte’s Media Consumer Survey 2017. So how does this increase affect our wellbeing, and is it all bad news?
Well, according to clinical and health psychologist Dr Amanda Gordon, binge watching TV has its benefits.
