The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) laid the foundation stone for a premier gem and jewellery training institute in Udupi, Karnataka, on June 16th.
The ceremony was attended by Nirmala Sitharaman, minister of state for commerce & industry (independent charge). Also present on the occasion was Manoj Dwivedi, joint secretary, ministry of commerce & industry.
The Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ) in Udupi is being set up in association with the National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad. IIGJ Udupi is the GJEPC’s first foray into the education and training field in southern India. It is the latest among a series of training institutes and facility centres being set up by GJEPC in India.
Addressing the function, Sitharaman said, “Across the globe, the best of jewellery pieces are mainly handmade. Global retail giants like Cartier, Boucheron or Van Cleef & Arpels command premium prices for their handmade jewellery.” She said that India, whose forte lies in crafting the most intricate handmade jewellery, should capitalise on this opportunity by building necessary infrastructure.
