Call it the ultimate role reversal – we’ll stop short of payback! But seriously, don’t wait until a crisis to make important decisions. No matter what their age (or yours), ask your folks these six questions now to avoid messy red tape and tears later.

1 HOW LONG DO YOU SEE YOURSELF LIVING HERE?

Nine out of 10 older adults want to remain in their home as they age. While that’s a lovely idea, none of us really know what lies in store – we don’t know how we’ll age or what illnesses or other stumbling blocks might pop up along the way to mess with our plans. So, always ask, ‘What is your Plan B?’ Come to the conversation armed with information, including the average cost, pros and cons of each potential situation. THE SIBLING CONVO

Tricky family situations can bring out the best – and worst – in us. This is why it’s a good idea to have a sit-down with everyone before there’s a crisis, to strategise and make sure you’re on the same page. Discuss things like who brings what to the table. Is anyone able and prepared to have Mum or Dad come and live with them? If so, what practicalities need considering? Can someone step in to offer occasional respite? Who has the most time available? Who can be the primary person for taking care of finances, medical appointments and sorting out any legal red tape?
