SUPER SINGER MOHAN KANAN

This is a musician who needs no introduction. Mohan Kannan, being born in a music family, singing and composition come naturally to him. Be it his soul-stirring number ‘Kinare’ or playful song ‘Jhumritalaiya,’ one can clearly see his vocal range and versatility. From releasing new ‘Agnee’ singles to starting a digital series ‘Soundcheck,’ he has a lot in store for his fans.

Chandra Thapa sits in a candid conversation with the singing sensation Mohan Kannan.

Hear from the singing star himself what he has to say about his musical journey in Bollywood and new compositions.

What first got you into music?

I was born into music, my mother Smt. Vasantha Kannan being a renowned Carnatic classical violinist, vocalist and Guru; my father having dedicated himself to promoting Carnatic music through his organisations, Music Circle and Rasikhapriya, and all the musicians who were always in and out of our house. My sister and I couldn’t have avoided music even if we tried to, and thankfully, we didn’t try.

Who inspired you to make music?

My mother and my Guruji, Sri S Sekhar, are jointly the reason I know anything about music. Having said that, I didn’t really have any specific inspiration that pushed me to create music. Just as being born into this family happened, one day a friend asked me if I wanted to compose, and without thinking of whether I could or couldn’t, I just started composing. Along the way, there have of course been multiple inspirations as musicians I look up to, like Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Sting whose musical creations I deeply admire.
