At 42, British actor Scott Adkins is one of the top action stars in the world, with an impressive career spanning The Expendables 2, Doctor Strange, Accident Man and his famous portrayal of Russian MMA fighter Yuri Boyka in the Undisputed film franchise. In his latest outing, Avengement, he takes both his action and acting chops to the next level.
Adkins tells us how he stays in such great shape and how he prepared for his latest film...
Scott, you’re known for your highly physical fight scenes. What is your typical training program?
I train for muscle mass, essentially looking good on camera, and practice martial arts. I do weight training three or four days a week. I used to do a bodybuilding style routine with a body-part split but now I prefer full body training. It feels less taxing on my body, and I feel like I can actually train more. I’ll start with legs and I try to hit different exercises for each body part, every session, to keep my body guessing.
I also train martial arts twice a week, drilling and hitting pads, with one or two yoga sessions for flexibility. I need my body to look a certain way on camera, but then I also need it to be functional for what I’m doing.
Did you mention yoga, is stretching important to you?
