<p>We parked and sat patiently for about twenty minutes whispering wild guesses. The favourite postulation seemed to be that there was a kill in the tall elephant grass. If we had been on elephant back we would have been able to enter the great wall of grass, but since it was higher than our vehicle, we had to resort to guesswork. At this point, without warning, a pack of three dholes went past us... following a sambar family! Only, this time they moved to our right. We were aware from reports written by S. H. Prater (1948) that wild dogs sometimes intermingle with grazing sambar, predator and prey often ignoring each other. So we were not really expecting any great activity from this lot. It was 9.10 a.m. and the sun was fairly high as the sambar family crossed the road followed by the pack. Suddenly all hell broke loose in the thick bamboo brakes about 20 m. from us. We could see nothing, but could make out from the sounds that a hunt was indeed in progress. Our riveted concentration was suddenly broken by the sound of another vehicle heading in our general direction. The vehicle would almost certainly have wound its way towards us as it was probably peopled with members of the &lsquo;let&rsquo;s-see-a-tiger-brigade&rsquo;. So we nonchalantly looked away from the scene of actual action, to mislead them into proceeding elsewhere in search of their&rsquo; quarry&rsquo;. Our ploy failed. You have to admire the almost mystic way in which drivers of tourist vehicles sniff out excitement in the forest. The guide accompanying the Gypsy we sought to throw off&lsquo;our&rsquo; trail, soon directed his car-load towards us. But, predictably, they sped off after a short wait of around five minutes. They were either not interested in watching dholes, or were not aware of how rare it is to see them. After two or three minutes of waffling they revved their engines and proceeded in the opposite direction. Perhaps they imagined we were some strange sorts parked for no discernible reason. As they moved away we breathed a collective sigh of relief. Our patience rewarded, we could see what was taking place. The three dholes were methodically and slowly encircling the sambar family and simultaneously making low sounds. But only one dhole would actually attack at a time. The two female sambars in response had protectively manoeuvered the fawn between them and were attempting to intimidate the pack by punching their front feet heavily on the ground and kicking at the insolent dhole that ventured too close with their hind legs. Watching through my binoculars I could see that one doe had a bleeding left eye. I recalled having read an article by the late K. M. Tiwari, President of the Forest Research Institute, that dholes will try and incapacitate or disadvantage their prey by blinding it. Dholes have been referred to as the whistling hunters, but at times I could swear that their cries sometimes took on the quality of injured wails and cries. A fifteen-minute tussle ensued between predator and prey and in the frenzy the fawn was successfully separated from the does. It fell wounded to the ground. Not quite dead, its legs jerked in pain. The does still tried to protect it and were nuzzling and nudging it, persuading it to get up and flee to safety. It was a heart-wrenching sight. But this was the law of the jungle. One living being was in the throes of losing its valuable life so that another may live. The does sought to persuade the fawn to stand, till its breath ebbed away. Only after satisfying themselves that there was absolutely nothing more to be done did they abandon the young one to its own fate.</p><p>I watched and photographed the drama for about 45 minutes and should by all reason have been satisfied for the day. But wildlifers are a greedy lot! We set off into the jungle for still more adventures.&nbsp;</p>
