In dieser Angelegenheit

Autumn is here, the clocks have gone back and the nights are drawing in. Gloomy days for some... but for those of us looking forward to winter this is the most exciting time of the year.

In this issue of Ski+board we meet two female mountain guides in Chamonix. These women have not only overcome the challenges of working as foreigners in France, but have broken through the glass ceiling in a male-dominated profession. Magnus Wistrom skis with them, and finds they could teach some of their fellow male guides a thing or two about attentiveness to the experience and enjoyment of their clients.

Across the pond, Neil English visits what is now Canada’s second biggest resort, Sun Peaks, and falls in love with the place all over again. It’s also one of the few resorts in the world where it is possible to try speed skiing — the fastest non-motorised sport on the planet. Chris Exall, who dabbled in the sport, recalls his experience of skiing at 98mph.

Meanwhile, editor Colin Nicholson takes a more leisurely pace as he takes to the skies in a hot air balloon at the Swiss resort of Château d’Oex, where the first round-the-world flight began. And Andreas Hofer continues his quest to find the world’s first skiers in Mongolia.

You’ll also find all the usual round-ups of what to put on your shopping list before the season begins in earnest, with this issue focusing on things all-mountain — skis, boots and boards, as well as helmets and fashion.
