Desh 17 May 2022 issue revisits the enduring legacy of Raja Rammohan Roy on his 250th birth anniversary. A harbinger of Indian liberalism and a truly cosmopolitan figure, Roy’s ideology was monumental as well as transcendental. As a tireless reformist, Roy was a staunch advocate of Western education, condemned polytheistic practices and idolatry and championed the cause of women’s liberation and internationalism. He was an independent thinker with a broad social vision and striking modernity of thought. However, his ambiguous stance on colonialism and the espousal of a laissez-faire economy has always been mired in controversy. This issue comprises essays by Amiya Prosad Sen, Baridbaran Ghosh, Sobhanlal Duttagupta, Amalshankar Bandyopadhyay and Ananda Bhattacharya. There is an essay by Subhayu Bandyopadhyay on dark, mysterious and miraculous stories surrounding books. The issue also carries regular sections like the serialized novels Kanchanfuler Kobi by Masud Ahmad and Udhatakani Chittani by Sutapa Basu, Mantabya, Granthalok, Shilpo Sanskriti, Galpo, Chithipatra, Seshkatha etc.
