German footwear brand BIRKENSTOCK–with origins dating back to the late 18th century — has entered the Indian market, starting with sale of its popular sandals online before opening a store. Leayan Global has roped in Vicky Kaushal, Bollywood actor, as the brand ambassador for its leading leather footwear brand Red Chief. These are a few from a long list.
The industry is certainly going to see lots of action. What does this mean for the second largest footwear producer? Today India’s footwear production accounts for approximately 9 per cent of the global annual production of 22 billion pairs. It is expected to grow further. Given some of the measures introduced by the government in the face of slowdown, every stakeholder has the valid reason to be optimistic.
