As you read through this issue, you would notice that instead of being focused on a single theme unlike our previous issues, we have included a range of topics from different specializes to cater to  diverse areas within the arena of physiotherapy. We are sure you would find this to be a change for better.

Time is the most pivotal entity that controls our lives. It has no beginning and no ending. All things are born in time, grow in time and then decay and die in time. Time moves at its own pace. It is a constant phenomenon that surrounds our existence, second by second, minute by minute, every hour, every day, week, month or year. It cannot be commanded or even managed as most people might like to believe. How can you manage something that is not in your control? What you essentially manage are your own priorities and not the time. No matter what you do, time doesn’t change its course for anyone. It does not wait for kings or princess and has no pity for beggars. It cannot be analyzed. It cannot be criticized (though we all do at times in some or the other way.

I am talking about the magnificence of time with you today because of a special reason. As I started writing this note, I realized that the issue you are holding in your hands is the 54th consecutive issue of PHYSIOTIMES and we have completed 9 years of service in this field of physiotherapy. What a tremendous journey it has been with you all by our side. Time has really flown and we are grateful to you all for having come so far.

“Adventure without risk is Disneyland”. Sounds interesting when you hear this for the first time. More so when you learn that the statement comes from a 15 year old. Yes, this is what the home page of her website says. This is what her email signature reads. This single statement portrays her life philosophy of how taking risks is what adventure is all about. 

Yes! I am talking about the 15-year-old mountaineering sensation, Jaahnavi Sriperambuduru from Hyderabad, who aims to become the first and youngest girl from India to scale all 'Seven Summits' in the world. In this issue, we bring to you an exclusive interview with this mysterious mountain girl and what makes her take up such a challenging sport at this age. What are the kind of preparations required, how is her training schedule and most importantly, what is the role of physiotherapy in her journey.

In Walt Disney’s 1995 animated film Pocahontas, Grandmother Willow says “Sometimes the right path is not the easiest one”. The path to success is full of challenges, hurdles and obstacles. But in the end, taking the right path will pay off, regardless of how much harder you had to work on that path.In this issue, we present the story of one such self-motivated being, who didn’t succumb to her destiny and went against the stereotype to choose the right path and live a life that she desired for herself and not what her fate had thrust upon her. When told as a 29-year-old that her choice was between paralysis and death, anyone else would have had a heartbreak. But for Deepa Malik, life has never been able to pose a challenge that could dim her spirit. She has never been daunted by adversity. We are privileged and honoured to present an exclusive interview with Padmashri Deepa Malik whose life is a case history of triumphs against all odds, a portrayal of indomitable will and insurmountable spirit.

 Interestingly, Deepa Malik is quite earnest in her appreciation for physiotherapy in her life, be it her post surgical rehab or her career as a sports person and athlete over the last decade. She acknowledges and emphasizes the tremendous role played by all her physios right from the early childhood to the most recent ones she has worked with in her getting back to the rhythm. As Physiotherapists, you all deal with people with disability. The next time you see someone with disability lose hope, share Deepa Malik’s inspirational journey and motivate them to reach their highest potential. After all there is “ability” hidden within every “disability”. We are sure Deepa’s story would give you valuable insights into the mind and psyche of a champion athlete who created history despite being limited by her physical ability.

There is an old English proverb "Where there's a will, there's a way". We have also heard that “fortune favors the brave & the gritty”. But how many of us actually have the courage to exhibit this grit and heroism in our day to day lives?  How many of us pursue and achieve our goals despite difficulties and challenges? From battling the difficult days in the hospital to chasing her dreams of scaling the highest peak, here is a story of Arunima Sinha, who is a living example of courage, passion & dedication. 

For Arunima Sinha though, it all started as a deeply personal journey during the darkest period of her life. On April 11, 2011, she was thrown out of a moving train for resisting a chain-snatching attempt by some hoodlums. She was hit by a passing train and was seriously injured. She was hospitalised with serious leg and pelvic injuries and in a bid to save her life, doctors had to amputate her left leg below the knee.

Leg is but obviously required to climb Mt. Everest, but what is needed most is a brave heart. The loss of a limb did not hinder Arunima Sinha from scaling the highest hurdles. Arunima conquered Mt. Everest on 21st May, 2013 by dint of her firm determination and strong will power to become the first Indian woman with an artificial limb to achieve this feat. 

As Physiotherapists, you all deal with people with disability in your day to day practice. Despite your best help and interventions, sometimes they lose hope. Sinha’s story is an inspiration to all such people who give up on their lives due to small obstacles. She has proved that a strong determination and will is far more important than a strong body. She overcame her challenges and made history.

I wish you and your loved ones 2017 be the best year of your lives yet. This New Year is a precious platform we have all been blessed with. This is the time of lofty ideals, high ambitions, fresh commitments and gorgeous intentions. I sincerely wish that this year you unchain your potential, elevate the caliber of your work, serve your customers vividly, multiply your health beautifully, achieve higher pedestal of growth, install the skills of the titans, forgive those yet unforgiven, exemplify strength, honor and decency, start living with true magnificence and go for great. 

It is said that each great work has to pass through these stages - ridicule, opposition, and then acceptance. “To Be Great is to Be Misunderstood.” Ralph Waldo Emerson has coined this phrase in his essay, “Self Reliance.” The author continues saying, “Pythagoras was misunderstood, and Socrates, and Jesus, and Luther, and Copernicus, and Galileo, and Newton, and every pure and wise spirit that ever took flesh.”

The interview focuses on  various aspects of badminton as a sport and how physiotherapy plays a crucial role in keeping her fit and game

The issue also features an interview with Dr. Kiran Challagundla, Physiotherapist - Indian Badminton Team and
a very vital part of the Olympic glory brought by Sindhu along with the coach P. Gopichand. He has discussed his long standing association with badminton and how a physio plays different roles at different stages.

Winston Churchill was so right when he made such a profound statement with regard to success. Don’t we all say that success is not a destination but a journey in itself? However, it is an arduous journey full of challenges, roadblocks, obstacles and what not. But then, nothing important was ever achieved without someone taking a chance, without someone going the extra mile, without someone defying the odds to excel and be the best. It is this monomaniacal focus that opens doors of multiple possibilities. 

In this issue, we introduce to you one such gritty woman, whose dedication, determination and passion made her create history and bring laurels for the entire nation.  It gives us immense pleasure to present an exclusive interview with one of the poster girls of Indian Olympics in Rio, Sakshi Malik, the only female wrestler to have ever won a medal at the Olympics. Her feat is truly extraordinary, notwithstanding the struggle she had to undergo in this exhilarating journey from Rohtak to Rio. The interview focuses on the role of physiotherapy in her career and how the contribution of a physio matters during tournament as well as while training in the prevention and management of injuries in a high contact sport like wrestling. 

It is heartening to note that Sakshi has emphatically stated how crucial physios are to them in their sport. We thank Sakshi for her encouraging remarks about physiotherapists.

Apart from various scholarly articles, the issue features coverage of a nation-wide series of seminars on Marketing in Physiotherapy initiated by PHYSIOTIMES in various cities under the title “Marketing Mantra”.  The seminar is intended to horn the marketing and management skills of physios so that they can better manage their practice. The issue has also covered stories of the World Physiotherapy Day celebrations across India on Sept 8, 2016.

The choices we make and the chances we take, determine our destiny. They make us special, put a bar of distinction between us and everyone else. Every successful person goes through struggle, but they choose to fight rather than doing what others say. This issue is a tribute to one such champion & a sportswoman who has made India proud with her glorious achievements, Mary Kom - A five-time world amateur boxing champion.

We are privileged and honoured to present an exclusive interview with the legendary boxer. Apart from the other aspects of her life, the interview covers the role of Physiotherapy in her career. We are glad to share that she has lauded the physios for their critical role in a sports person’s performance. In her own words, “Physiotherapists are my closest mates next to coaches.” We express our deepest gratitude to Mary Kom on behalf of the Physiotherapy Community for her inspiring comments. In this issue, we have presented the views and experiences of some of the Indian physios who had accompanied our athletes at the Rio Olympics 2016, to dissect what goes in the making of Olympians & champions & the role they are required to play in such events.

The Indian summer is back with a bang. The scorching heat of the sun with mercury hovering above 40o C in most Indian cities has made life tough. Arrival of rains would perhaps be the only respite from the sizzling heat. Many of you would have planned a vacation with family to escape the humdrum of everyday life to relax, rejuvenate & unwind. Interestingly such travel also brings with it an opportunity to explore, dream and discover as Mark Twain has beautifully put across. 

One such opportunity I got was to meet Chet Cooper, the founder of ABILITY Magazine, USA and an exceptional human passionate to make a positive difference in the lives of people with disabilities across the globe. No wonder, the issue features an extensive interview with Chet Cooper and the work he has been doing for the past 25 years to improve health, utilize human potential and make the world a better place for those living with a disability. As Rick (Humphrey Bogart) says in Casablanca, I am sure this interview with Chet Cooper is just a beginning of a beautiful friendship. 

As always, the issue is full of interesting accounts of varied topics of interest to physios from experts across the globe. However, one thing needs a special mention and that is the creative prowess of the Indian Physiotherapists. We had announced a story writing competition in the previous issue and to our surprise, the response has been overwhelming. The quality of the stories submitted is really heartwarming and thought provoking. It was a herculean task for our editorial team to come to consensus and decide the winners. Nevertheless, I congratulate all participants. Keep it up !!!

Our world continues to be an unpredictable place in which to live and work. Disasters; be it natural or man-made; will and do occur, seemingly with ever-increasing frequency. Although natural disasters have been the one under discussions most of the time, strategies that enhance our resilience, sustainability and ability to recover after a disaster would also apply to man-made disasters. Physiotherapists in collaboration with key stakeholders have a major role to play in disaster preparedness and response management. 

This special issue highlights the role of physiotherapists in the wake of a traumatic disaster through experiences and learnings of several experts who have been an active part of some or the other disaster in the past. The 7.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked Nepal on Saturday, April 25 2015 caused enormous devastation throughout the country. It is however, heartening to note that physiotherapists from Nepal and foreign countries along with other health care professionals & volunteering organisations have played a crucial role to rehabilitate the survivors, provide orthopedic and rehabilitative care to injured people and extend psychosocial support to help those affected communities.

To sum up, I would say that sometimes, the darkest times can bring us to the brightest places. No matter how difficult things seem, there is always HOPE. (Hang On Pain Ends) That every dark cloud has a silver lining. That there is light at the end of every tunnel. Every disaster is an opportunity to show our resilience, tenacity and resolve to fight back and help those afflicted souls live a life of dignity and independence. I am sure this special issue instigates this belief in each and every physiotherapist on the planet.

A WCPT Congress is a mammoth event for physical therapists all over the world. It is with great
pleasure I wish to share that PHYSIOTIMES was invited as an official media to cover the event.
Rightly so, this issue is dedicated to WCPT Congress 2015 held at Singapore from 1st to 4th May’15.
The report covers various news & events and brings you the crux of some of the key scientific
deliberations and developments that were discussed at the Congress. The cover feature is an
interview with the newly elected president of WCPT, Dr. Emma Stokes, a dynamic leader who is all
geared up to take the legacy of WCPT further in her new assignment.

There is a brief interview with Dinesh Verma, an Indian Physiotherapist, now settled in Singapore.
Dinesh has served as the past president of the Singapore Physiotherapy Association and is currently
the secretary general of the Asia Western Pacific region of WCPT and a successful entrepreneur cum
physical therapist. It is definitely a moment of pride for us to see an indian physiotherapist doing
well at the international level. To give the readers a more comprehensive outlook, the issue also
features a historical perspective on India’s participation in the WCPT Congress in the past four
decades by our mentor Dr. M G Mokashi, who has attended the Congress twice in 1974 (at
Montreal) and 1995 (at Washington DC).

As per Census of India 2011, there are about 27 million disabled people in India of which 5.44 million are afflicted with " disability in movement" with an overall growth of 20% over the last decade. Therefore, the need for orthotics and prosthetic devices is paramount. This special issue is an attempt to summarize the key developments in Orthotics and Prosthetics (O&P) in India right from the historical perspective to latest technological develpments.

This issue provides useful information on state-of-the-art clinical
applications of various technological tools available to therapists
working in neurological rehabilitation viz. video game play for
restoring brain function, virtual reality, graded mirror imagery,
non invasive brain stimulation, use of technology to improve self
reliance and employability in disabled patients etc. The issue also
addresses important clinical aspects in stroke such as genu
recurvatum and hemiplegic shoulder pain.

The highlight of the issue is the inteview of Susan B O’Sullivan, a
stalwart in the field and her thoughts on several aspects of
rehabilitation and her candid views on the current and forthcoming
editions of her world famous books. The issue also features a
special article on NDT in 2015 by Cathy Hazzard, a senior NDTA
instructor and one of the five editors of the soon to be published
book NDT in action.

At PHYSIOTIMES, 2014 has been special in many ways. The year began with an overwhelming response to our life membership offer. We thank you for your continued trust in us. In this year, starting from Volume VI, we have been taking young & dynamic physios on the cover page. The objective is not to promote a particular individual, but rather appreciate their untiring efforts towards the betterment of the profession. His success is a case in point for many young physios apprehensive about their future in the field. 

In this issue we bring to you a range of topics that not only focuses on different clinical conditions or their physiotherapy management but also addresses some of the pressing issues facing physiotherapy profession in India like that of “Dr” Prefix, “Physios being different from paramedics”, “Autonomous Practice in PT”, “Evidence Based Practice” etc.  We have also started an interactive column “Creative Corner” with this issue where Matthew J Taylor, the editor of the forthcoming book “Fostering Creativity in Rehabilitation” would orient you on the need for creativity in physiotherapy. Starting this issue, there would be a series of two articles on “Treatment Adherence” that remains a major bottleneck in getting desired prognosis in physiotherapy. 

Another fascinating observation you might make as you read further is about the diversity of author’s who have contributed their expertise. On one hand we have Kathy Burgland, the Director of Postprofessional Degree Program, Andrews University, USA who discusses a case report on TMJ and on the other hand we have Pallavi Wakode, an MPT student, who discusses the need for CBR. We have Tanzila Potia, a Clinical & Research Physiotherapist from Sheffield Hallam University, UK talking on treatment adherence and we have Vivek Shrivastava, Gourav Banerjee and Ketan Bhatikar, the young brigade of physios expressing their views on critical issues of importance. Loss or disruption of normal vestibular function results in vertigo, loss of balance and orientation, and falls. With an aging population, the incidence and cost of balance disorders will increase. By age 75, balance disorders are one of the most common reasons for seeking health care.
