In dieser Angelegenheit

Often, the only surviving record of a culture is its art. A jewellery piece, when finely crafted, becomes a timeless work of art worthy of being passed down through generations. Jewellery and art aficionados have been treated to a season of special fairs held in London and New York, giving them an opportunity to indulge in and cherish these coveted possessions.

The Goldsmith’s Fair in London drew participation from 150 of the UK’s best jewellers and silversmiths showcasing modern jewellery treasures, while the 10-day Asian Art London held a series of auctions, gallery-selling exhibitions and customised museum visits. The European Fine Art Fair, popularly known as TEFAF, debuted in New York with some stunning haute joaillerie masterpieces. We bring to you a medley of admirable treasures in Museum Tour and Spotlight.

Delhi-based designer Neha Dani’s limited edition and bespoke jewellery pieces are prized as they reflect the unique taste of the wearer. Her one-off organic rhodium-plated gold renditions look like Impressionist artworks stippled and shaded with fancy colour diamonds. Read about her journey to the top in Creative Charisma.

Diamonds are the focus of ace jewellery designer Reena Ahluwalia, whose paintings project the many facets of this arrestingly beautiful gemstone. In Tete-a-Tete, Reena talks about the ease with which she switches roles from designer to painter. Diamonds again take centre stage in the Cover Feature, which illuminates various fancy cuts like marquise, ovals, and baguettes in exciting patterns. This issue also highlights major jewellery trends for the wedding season in the Bridal Splendour, Style Quotient, and Bridal Gallery sections.

Neha Dani: New Age Impressionist

A recent entrant into the field of jewellery making, Delhi-based NEHA DANI is already being counted in the stratosphere of rare jewellery artists. Although her detailed renditions in customcoloured rhodium-plated 18-karat gold set with a multitude of gemstones draw heavily from nature, the one-off, sculptural pieces resemble artworks of impressionist painters.

The Art and the Artist

A painting elicits an outpouring of different reactions from its viewers as each person has an individual way of interpreting a familiar object through his or her lens of aesthetics, beliefs, and appreciation. it is the virtuosity of a painter to bring together her technical skills and infuse a bit of soul, artistic vision and imagination on the canvas. the power of a painting lies in an artist’s ability to share a story and use the painting as a medium to convey a deeper truth.

Refined Minimalism

If you browse through Ageerika Hari’s jewellery at her brand Vaitaanika’s flagship store in Shahpur Jat, New Delhi, you will find that though the pieces are very much driven by Indian sensibilities, they have an air of restrained elegance. Textured gold, relief work, openwork elements and a bevy of gemstones are complemented by clean lines, symmetry and simplicity in forms. The pieces are striking without being overbearing or loud. The brand embraces individuality to its fullest as Ageerika creates only one piece of every design. Once sold, the design is never repeated at the workshop. Ageerika speaks to Aliya Ladhabhoy about the brand’s minimalistic lines.
