It’s celebration season! In this sunny summer issue, we’re celebrating the weather with our picks of hikes, bike trails and camping spots, the giving season with gift guides galore, and the absolutely outstanding city Christchurch has become. We’re taking a look back on a wild decade, exploring milestones and stories from a decade of earthquake rebuild, and taking a moment to marvel at the excellent eateries, buzzing bars, vibrant culture scene, and wonderful people that make Christchurch what it is today. We’ve come a long way, and it’s only getting better!

Celebrate good times, come on. It's a celebration! Kool & The Gang’s disco banger is a welcome ear-worm for me as our season of sun and fun kicks off. How are you going to celebrate? Throwing shapes to some sick beats at Hagley Park? Skanking to Fat Freddy’s? Singing along to a Hoodoo Gurus’ classic with Dave Faulkner?  Or maybe a day worshipping at the altar of beer? How about slurping down some huhu grubs? Would you like a gin with that? Choices, choices, choices – isn’t it wonderful to have those again! With the borders thrown open I am also looking forward to a long overdue reunion with friends and whanau from afar. It’s been so long! One thing I have learned is to not take for granted the opportunity to mash it up in a mosh pit or mix and mingle in a crowded bar. As Joni sings, you don’t know what you’ve lost till it’s gone. So I’m on a mission to make sure I wring every last drop of good times from the months ahead. Not just in a crowd but also in some of the beautiful quiet spaces we are so blessed to have. Whether that’s heading into the high country or just taking the dog for a walk on the beach. It’s ka pai to be back at Cityscape. I love the buzz that comes with sharing the city’s latest with our readers, both in print and online. When I was last here, in early 2020, it seemed everything I was writing about was getting cancelled the next day. Dark times indeed. But now we have come into the light. Long evenings, warm seas and cool company beckon.

This winter we’re all about the cosy spaces and grand developments bringing new facets to Ōtautahi. We’ve gathered our own insider info, and learned from the experts to share with you the latest and greatest when it comes to landscape, interior and personal style design. We’ve also got some ideas and advice on ways to disconnect from the digital, and some titbits on how to design yourself a holistic wellbeing routine. Find destinations for Cityscapers with a travel itch – from Northland to Antarctica. And we’ve got the latest in beauty, events, cuisine and culture. It’s the time of year for new beginnings, new flowers, sunshine and a quickly-expanding sense of adventure, which there is plenty to take advantage of in this city of ours. We hope that throughout this sometimes-challenging year, we have managed to communicate the importance and benefits of these well-researched and effective tenets. Wow, what a ride this decade has been so far! It’s a time to be proud of being a New Zealander and proud of being in Christchurch. This year we’ve seen people come together in a truly inspiring way, despite extreme circumstances and physical distancing. Long before lockdown was a thing, at your Cityscape, your Christchurch magazine, we chose to make 2020 all about the 5 Ways to Wellbeing, and they have never been more relevant than right now. Look after yourselves, folks, and take time for your 5 ways: Connect, Be active, Take notice, Keep learning, and Give. Here at Cityscape we are beginning to feel the effects of following this kaupapa, or set of principles, that we have adopted for the new year and new decade. This issue is chocker with ideas that will help you take up the 5 Ways challenge. Far from being an imposition, they can be a lot of fun – wellbeing is a joyful state, after all. On a sombre note, though, the events of last March left a deep scar on Christchurch and its Muslim community. There can be no better way to mark the tragedy than by finding ways to Connect with those affected, and to Give any support and aroha you can. To Be Active, try getting off Netflix and going to a show. We are spoilt for choice, with The Court Theatre, Showbiz Christchurch, NZ Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet bringing some banging productions to our stages. And you’ll find it hard to sit still during Tina Turner tribute show TINA: Simply the Best. Curiosity is the key to Taking Notice and also to Keep Learning. We have plenty of options for both, including April’s Body Mind Spirit – HEALTH EXPO, which will feature workshops on mindfulness meditation, yoga, detox for health, astrology, holistic pulsing and mediumship, among others. And to Give, get along to disability support group Hohepa Canterbury’s fundraising art exhibition and sale in May. It’s art with heart.

Welcome to 2020. For our first issue of a new decade, Cityscape has taken up the 5 Ways to Wellbeing as a kaupapa, or set of principles, underpinning our editorial direction for 2020 and beyond. If you haven’t heard of them before, the 5 Ways – Connect, Be active, Take notice, Keep Learning, and Give – have been taken up by mental health agencies and organisations around the world. There is extensive scientific evidence that if practised regularly, the 5 Ways will lift your wellbeing. The challenge is to find ways to introduce these actions into our daily lives. Between the covers of Cityscape we have curated a selection of experts local and international that can help. Supporting local businesses by getting offline and in-store is one way to connect with your community as well as be more active and giving – as consumers, we often make big decisions about where to spend our money on the basis of saving a dollar or two. Bring on the party, Cityscapers! Addington Cup Week kicks off the season we love to love, and we are sooo ready. We bring you all the deets on the biggest week in Christchurch’s social calendar.
