Now on its 66th year, the Philippine Heart Association (PHA) has remained steadfast in its commitment of making every Juan and Pedro in the country have access to adequate care by a cardiovascular specialist. Its trained and certified members are now spread all over the country, dispensing an excellent quality of cardiovascular care. With its goal to make every Filipino knowledgeable on the basics of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), it has gone all the way down to the grassroots level to train people who can cascade their knowledge on CPR to every barangay in the country.

H&L is dedicating this issue to Dr. Ramon F. Abarquez, Jr., who helped shape the practice of Cardiology in the country with his innovative ideas, His ‘Me-first’ and not “Me-too’ philosophy inspired hundreds, probably thousands, of medical trainees and Cardiology fellows he has painstakingly mentored to come up with bright research ideas that can help enhance clinical practice in the country. He was also one of the pioneering columnists of H&L, who provided the inspiration that kept this publication going despite numerous challenges.
