Welcome to the New Year and an exciting issue of Asian Geographic JUNIOR! We start our journey of discovery and fun this year with a fascinating theme – Asia’s Most Recognisable Faces. This issue, you will learn more about Asians in the past and present that have made a mark in history. Be inspired by their deeds and discoveries that have made their names echo over time, unforgotten.

Asia is home to several distinct non-human faces as well! As you turn the pages of this issue, we hope you will be captivated by the diversity of animals, cultures and stories that Asia has to of fer the world. From the strange and bizarre to the brave and mighty, Asia is one continent that has it all.


In this issue of Asian Geographic Junior, we have prepared two special feature stories for you. The first is “25 Astonishing Asians”, where we look at the achievements of 25 amazing people from around Asia. You may recognise, and feel inspired by, several of them! 

The second story is “Drawing Attention”. This feature has been carefully planned to show you how ar tists create their art. Many, of course, do their painting in their studio, using a paintbrush and colours. Some ar tists enjoy going outdoors to sketch. Yet others draw using their mobile tablet or a digital pen. Perhaps you will feel encouraged to take up a pencil or a watercolour brush too!

In this issue, we dive into the world of sports and adventure! We find out the interesting stories behind ancient asian sports like jujitsu, kabaddi and pencak silat, then look at how the modern pastime of gaming became an Olympic event! We also have lots of fun facts about foods that would help you become an athletic superstar!  After all the sporting excitement, we take an adventure to learn about the mysteries of mountains, caves and the ocean. Our final stop is the Komodo island, which is home to pink beaches, amazing marine life and the fearsome Komodo dragon. For some hands-on fun, we show you how to make a shark toy and some yummy basketball-themed cookies!

This issue, we take a peek on the softer side of Asia with some of the region’s traditional cultural practices. Carried on through generations of ancestors – parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents – these ways to dance, heal, and hunt that are even today done using the same methods as when they were invented hundreds of years ago! Others involve experimental, dangerous or plain crazy ideas that didn’t make it to modern times – for obvious reasons. How do nomads live? How was cheese made? How do you catch an eagle? We explore all these questions… and more!

Did you know there’s a train with rocket boosters on it? How about the fact that you’re probably half the size of the world’s biggest bat? And that there’s a super-mysterious disappearing bridge in India that has scientists all confused? (We want to know what you think!) Amazing science and modern technologies made these and more all happen… read on to find out how!

In this issue of AGJ, we take a look at power dynamics. In celebration of Singapore'a 52nd birthday, check our some of the colourful aspects of Singapore's culture since independence in 1965. We also sneak a peek at the timeline of independence in other parts of Asia. We take a look at the rise and fall of the great empires in history,  and also learn about the area with the most powerful earthquakes and volcanoes. Consider the different sources of energy that give power to our homes and motor vehicles - some are sustainable, some questionable, and some threatening in escalating climate change. From this, we know that power - in all its various forms - can be a force for good and bad. It can be volatile and unpredictable and, as history teaches us, can bring destruction when placed in the wrong hands. We take a look at some of Asia's maddest monarchs, whose whims and fancies and paranoia made them infamous. 

In this issue of Asian Geographic Junior, we’re taking a look at creative culture in Asia – from the ancient arts that make up our creative histories, to the more recent developments in artistic expression, which is constantly changing and seeking new outlets. Check out the various cultural traditions in the different parts of Asia and leaf through the archives of art history. Take a whiff of the odd (and sometimes scary) food choices in different Asian cultures, mindful of how some foods can impact the environment. Navigate the intercultural exchange of art forms from east to west, and vice versa, looking at how contemporary culture has become increasingly globalised. Debate that which makes us human, and how our world might be changed indefinitely by artificial intelligence. From Bollywood to breakdancing, let this issue inspire your creative juices!

In our next green issue of Asian Geographic Junior, we examine climate change and explain what it is, and what’s causing it. We delve into the science of global warming, trace the history of human actions that have caused it, and show you how our warming planet affects our populations, ecosystems and animal species. But, where there’s a will, there’s a way! Every one of us can lead the charge in making a positive difference to nurse our beautiful Earth back to good health. We show kids how to encourage a strong eco culture at home and in their communities by taking the initiative in recycling, water conservation, and using less energy. By committing to eco-savvy behaviour, we can all reduce our carbon footprints, and be environmental heroes.

The new year brings with it new resolutions, and ushers in new beginnings – and that’s exactly what we’re getting up to in the next issue of Asian Geographic Junior: looking at the beginnings or our Earth, its inhabitants, and the traditions, cultures and moments of genius that have made up our phenomenal history! We trace the early origins of our amazing animal species from Asia to other parts of the planet, and our own evolution from monkey to man. We take a look at the incredible inventions that have been produced in Asia across the centuries that have revolutionised our lives. We also examine the origins and traditions of different fashion trends in Asia, as well as the beginnings of some of the strangest superstitions in the region. Take history off the shelf, dust it off, and page through its uncanny coincidences! Mapping the history of humanity allows us to piece the bits of our puzzling existence together – and the picture looks pretty extraordinary. This issue of ASIAN Geographic Junior is dedicated to the Superwomen among us! From politics to arts, science and young female inventors, these Superwomen have entered history’s hall of fame for their courage and creativity.

Climate change is serious business - so let’s put the green mantra “reduce, reuse and recycle” into practice. In this issue, we check out 10 wacky eco-friendly inventions, 8 hardy animals who adapt quickly to changing climates and look back at some of history’s worst environmental disasters in Asia. This issue is about something that concerns all of us and very importantly, our future. I have featured some of the most amazing and beautiful jungles and rainforests in the region, but they are disappearing so quickly that scientists fear they will all be gone before even a hundred years are up!

Welcome to a brand new year with Asian Geographic JUNIOR! I am so pleased we are kicking of f the year with one of my favourite themes of all time – Great Asian Journeys. In fact, as I was putting the magazine together last year, I was embarking on an epic journey myself – sailing across the Pacific Ocean (the world’s largest) on a boat from the Philippines to Palau and not before stopping to bring relief goods to the sur vivors of Typhoon Yolanda (histor y’s biggest storm yet!). Oh, what an adventure it has been. When you are on a journey like that, you tend to ponder a lot about the things that are truly impor tant, be grateful with the blessings you have and discover things about yourself and your travel companions that you will never ever experience in any other situation...

We’ve come to the end of the year and what better way to end a great year than to take a look into the past and see how it has impacted the present. I think this will be a great read to do with your parents because it will definitely awake some wonder ful memories from their own childhoods. I would also like to take this oppor tunity to thank you for your suppor t and hope you will continue to make Asian Geographic JUNIOR your magazine of choice. We will track where it goes, what can be done with it and how we can minimise the way we dump our trash to help the environment. I’d also like you to read about some children who are not as lucky as you on page 42 in the Thinking Caps section. These children live in a garbage dump and have to scrounge for discarded litter to sell so they can fill their bellies...

The first half of the year is almost over and I am sure a lot of you are get ting excited about the upcoming holidays. But that means you’ll first have to get through the mid-year exams, so I hope this issue will inspire you to work hard when you read about the many treasures we have in Asia. These treasures are not just about precious stones and gems, they also include things and places that we hold ver y close to our hear ts. As the largest continent, we have a humongous number of cultures, traditions and places that give us our identity, and this identity is something we have to protect...

This issue is meant to make you cringe, your tummy turn and to make you go ‘ewww’ and ‘yuck’! But I’m sure this will be a fun read and a real page-turner where you can find out what being in a microscopic world is like, how you can make your own slime and find out the queer (and gross) habits of some animals.

Welcome to a brand new year! I’ve received many letters in the past year telling me how much you all love animals. So the team has dedicated a whole issue to them! It was a lot of fun and I learnt a lot putting the magazine together. Actually, the lesser-known animals were ver y intriguing and I ended up reading and researching more about them. It was really hard having to pick what to present to you because we just don’t have enough pages. We’ve also added another section, Geography, with juicy little facts about the countries in our giant continent...

My goodness, how time flies! I hope you have all had a great year having adventures, spending quality time with your families and making a dif ference for other people, no matter how small. In this last issue for 2012, the team chose Bridges as a theme because today, we can’t imagine a world without them. These physical connectors have gone beyond just getting us from one place to another. It has become a symbol that links cultures and ideas, and keeps us rooted with our past and aspiring towards the future...
